At closing time, outside the chapel, Ash answered a call from Shelly.
âAsh!â she said. âHey, dear. How are you doing?â
Fuck, fuck. He feigned a cough. âNot great. Was throwing up. Still have fevers.â
âI know you said it was contagious, but I simply canât leave you alone when youâre sick. Iâm running past the store and picking you up some things.â
âNo!â He coughed again as Ben and River emerged onto the porch. âI mean, thanks, but Iâm . . . Iâm staying with a friend. Iâm sure heâll look after me.â
âA friend? Iâve had a lot of experience looking afterââ
âHeâs a doctor!â For horses. But she didnât need to know the details. âA very good one.â
River lifted a quizzical brow, and heat shot up Ashâs neck.
âOkay, but call me if you need anything.â
Ash let out a silent relieved breath, thanked Shelly, and hung up.
Ben looked between Ash and River. Sensing some unspoken conversation, he scurried toward the street, waving goodbye.
âStaying with a friend?â River asked. âA doctor friend?â
Kill him already. âShelly wanted to check up on me. You were the first excuse that popped to mind. I donât actually expect to stay with you.â He laughed tightly.
âIs this the woman from the library? The one groping you?â
He shrugged. âYeah.â
âWere you and her â¦?â
Ash blinked, clueless how to respond to the crazy insinuation.
âI mean, it looked likeââ River said.
âNo. We havenât nor ever will!â
River lifted his hands. âSorry. I wasnât sure.â
âWhat would make you think that?â
âSheâs not unattractive. And youâre a single man who wants some fun.â
The hard emphasis on fun wasnât lost on him. Ash folded his arms. âJust because I want some fun doesnât mean Iâd have fun with anyone attractive. Would you have fun with just any man?â
Riverâs jaw tightened. âYouâre right. I wouldnât.â
Ash didnât like the finality of that, but he nodded. âOkay, then. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
He hurried to the sidewalk toward the bus stop, ignoring River calling his name. He wasnât sure why he was so pissed. River had made an assumption and apologized for it.
He wasnât the only one to have made that mistake.
A car pulled up alongside him. Windows rolled down, and Ash hid a sigh of relief at Riverâs voice. âGet in. Let me take you home.â
